More cocktails this week, Winter Cocktails by Maria del Mar Sacasa. This book has hot toddies, punches for parties, some classic cocktails and a few recipes. We cooked the Pimenton Cheese Toasties. These consisted of grated cheese, spices, chopped roasted peppers, Worcestershire sauce, and cream cheese, spread between two slices of white bread, outsides buttered and baked between two baking sheets. This was a way to do a grilled cheese sandwich that I’d never done before – it worked really well, and the toasties made a lovely weekday lunch. Friday night was a lovely night to try a cocktail, and we tried a Manhattan. It should be rye whisky, but the closest we had was some Jack Daniels, with Angostura bitters, red vermouth (the same brand as in last week’s martini) and a maraschino cherry. It was delicious! Finally, we made our own tomato juice – blitz cherry tomatoes, sugar, salt, lemon juice, horseradish, and Worcestershire sauce and strain through a sieve to get an amazingly tasty juice that was delicious on its own and made an incredible Bloody Mary! Next week its a book of Japanese Bento boxes which should be fun.
