Brie and truffles in the back of the fridge – You have got to love Nigel Slater!
This week’s book was Greenfeast by the wonderful Nigel Slater. From the first book I owned of his – Real food to his latest, A Cook’s Book, I’ve loved the way he writes about food and his love of food and cooking. As a family, we’ve always joked about how TV Nigel has the incredible fridge or cupboards where he opens it to find a little leftover truffle filled Brie or some other gourmet delight he has forgotten he had. He would then take the forgotten morsel and turn it into tonight’s fantastic supper dish. Greenfeast is a celebration of all that is vegetables. Some side dishes, some starters, mains. We didn’t do much from the book this week, but for Sunday lunch, we did a rather lovely barbecued side of salmon (such a simple recipe from River Cafe Easy 2 – side of salmon, salt, olive oil, on the barbecue and finish with a squeeze of lemon). We paired the salmon side with Nigel’s Carrots Spices Paneer. This was a lovely combination and worked well with the simple salmon and some boiled baby potatoes. We also cooked a couple of pretty good pasta dishes, though they were a little on the rich side. The orecchiette cauliflower cheese was really tasty and had the somewhat unusual dill as the herb to complement the dish. Also from a creamy pasta world was Orzo, smoked mozzarella, and thyme. The Orzo works like rice, so this was a creamy, cheesy risotto-like number. Pretty tasty, though, and one to keep with the cauliflower cheese in the pocket for a winter warmer. There were no lost truffles from the cupboard for us but some tasty veggy meals
