Next up was Seasonal Baking by the most royal of bakers, Fiona Cairns. This book, as you’d expect from the title, is organised into seasons. Now clearly, it’s not exactly spring here right now, but nevertheless, we elected for spring recipes. Both Mrs. B and I love a Bakewell tart, so we elected for Fiona’s Bakewell Tarts. These little cherry Bakewells were exceedingly good!
What’s more – they were dead easy to make. The pastry case was beautiful; a little raspberry jam topped with a frangipane mixture had just a hint of orange; Mrs. B. would have preferred it without the orange zest. Then the little tarts were topped with icing made with lemon juice, again something Mrs. B felt would have been better without the citrus. All this is topped with a glace cherry. These little tarts were brilliant—something to do again.
Later in the week, we made Homemade Lemonade. This was another straightforward recipe, and it was a hit with the little ones! Next week we’re cooking traditional British recipes with Brian Turner.
